On the Harvest, written by Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet and translated by James K. Finkel, is an exceptional work that immerses us in the world of Burgundian viticulture in the 19th century. Duvault-Blochet, a prominent figure in oenology, was the owner of the legendary Romanée Conti estate, one of the finest vineyards in Burgundy. He oversaw wine properties extending from Santenay to Vosne-Romanée.
Thanks to his innovative "gleuco-oenomètre" and remarkable intuition, Duvault-Blochet recorded precise observations in this text over 53 years of research, experimentation, and comparison. This work, of which only one original copy remains today preserved at the Municipal Library of Dijon, was first republished in 2002 by his descendants, Aubert de Villaine and Henry-Frédéric Roch, who were then co-managers of the Romanée-Conti estate.
This English edition, faithful to the original text and enhanced with illustrations, allows the English-speaking public to discover a quasi-cult text that, 150 years later, still surprises us with its modernity.
Presented as an excerpt from a larger work titled A Treatise on Wines, attributed to Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, On the Harvest remains an essential document for understanding the evolution of viticulture in Burgundy. Despite research conducted at the Municipal Library of Dijon and in the rare family archives, the complete text remains elusive.
