Description
In the past, winegrowers spoke of their property (or that of their neighbors) by the number of vines and not by hectares as they do today. Thus, my grandfather "had" 14,000 vines. My father, later, after purchases and exchanges of plots, reached up to 30,000 vines. Why this count?
Because winter pruning represents the hardest manual work in the vineyard. It was given a lot of importance (rightly so) and aesthetic quality often outweighed rationality. The pruner was sometimes judged severely based on their technique: how many times have I heard it said: "that one prunes well, that one prunes like a pig," "this one cuts well, this other one like a pig." With the development in vineyards, new varieties, and installation of consistent trellises, it has been necessary, for better or worse, to relearn how to prune, as well as to go increasingly faster and abandon winter treatments (sodium arsenite and yellow oils), leaving no room for fantasy and aesthetics.
This work, which is very practical, does not contain theoretical developments on pruning. It explains how to "cut well," whether it's a shoot, a cane, a thumb, or an arm, without creating large wounds. It shows, through many drawings and illustrations, how to form a vine in goblet, in Royat cordon, in Guyot (single, double...). Intentionally didactic, it is accessible to everyone, including beginners or non-professionals who want to learn the trade.
A chapter is dedicated to diseases, their recognition, and how to protect pruning cuts.
Happy pruning to all!
