Description

This guide is a special issue of the journal "Les Nouvelles Archives de la flore jurassienne et du nord-est de la France," a scientific journal shared by the Botanical Society of Franche-Comté and the National Botanical Conservatory of Franche-Comté and the Regional Observatory of Invertebrates. For the first time in France, readers will have a comprehensive overview of the main representatives of the Vitis genus present in both natural and anthropized environments. This practical guide is the result of close collaboration between botanists and grapevine experts. To facilitate the identification process, a significant effort has been made on the iconography with over 450 photographs illustrating the main grapevines found in the national territory. A key for identification explains the essential morphological characteristics to observe. Each taxon is the subject of a detailed record, including a brief history, description, ecology, potential confusion risks, and known distribution. The primary purpose of this guide is to share our knowledge with botanists and individuals responsible for the management and conservation of natural environments. It will also be of interest to students and professionals in the wine industry who, beyond vineyards, also wish to understand, in the field, the history of French grape varieties - the fallow lands, hedges, and roadsides have often retained traces of the profound transformation of vineyards in the 19th and 20th centuries. Observing a native wild grapevine in its natural environment is also a way to perceive the long journey that led to the different grape varieties of European cultivated vines.
