Description
Vine, Wine, and Climate Change, written by Jean-Marc Touzard and Nathalie Ollat, is a reference book that analyzes the effects of climate change on vines and wine production in France. With rising temperatures, vines experience earlier development, making them more vulnerable to spring frosts. Additionally, the grape maturation periods advance, thus altering the characteristics of the wines produced, with higher alcohol content and reduced acidity.
Extreme weather events, such as heatwaves or torrential rains, are becoming increasingly frequent, causing significant damage to vineyards. These phenomena particularly affect the south of France, where water stress is becoming more pronounced, leading to lower yields and changes in the organoleptic characteristics of the wines.
All French vineyards are affected by these upheavals, but some territories are also becoming more favorable to vine cultivation. Faced with these challenges, rapid adaptation is essential for the sustainability of the sector. But what strategies should be implemented and what decisions need to be made at different scales, both locally and nationally?
This book synthesizes the results of ten years of research as part of the Laccave project, led by INRAE, which concluded in 2021. The project's goal was to study the adaptation of the French wine sector to climate change. The book explores possible action levers, such as the introduction of new grape varieties, improved soil and water management, and innovations in vine management and oenological practices.
It also examines the need to reorganize the vineyard territory to better cope with new climatic conditions and proposes innovative solutions, such as new regulations and participatory approaches involving both winegrowers and policymakers in the sector.
This book offers a systemic and strategic vision for the adaptation of the wine sector, addressing issues at various levels. It is primarily aimed at industry professionals, teacher-researchers, as well as students in viticulture and oenology.
