Description
The Hilt Rouge "Estate Pinot Noir" 2018 | Wine from The Hilt Estate
The The Hilt Estate, located in the prestigious Sta. Rita Hills AVA appellation in California, is a gem of American viticulture. Founded by Stan Kroenke, who also owns the renowned Screaming Eagle estate and Bonneau du Martray in Burgundy, The Hilt embodies the alliance between Burgundian tradition and Californian innovation. Renowned winemaker Matt Dees has been overseeing the winemaking since 2004, bringing his exceptional expertise to each vintage. The estate is situated on Rancho Salsipuedes, where the vineyards benefit from a unique terroir, divided into three parcels: Radian, Bentrock, and Puerta del Mar, offering a great diversity of soils and microclimates thanks to the proximity of the Pacific Ocean.
The The Hilt Rouge "Estate Pinot Noir" 2018 is a wine of character, made from 100% Pinot Noir. Aged for 11 months in French oak barrels (only 8% new barrels, with the rest being neutral barrels), this wine showcases meticulous winemaking that respects the integrity of the fruit while bringing beautiful complexity. The 2018 vintage, particularly favorable in the Sta. Rita Hills region, allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes, resulting in a wine that is both concentrated and refined.
-
Nose: The nose is both expressive and elegant, revealing aromas of red fruits (cherry, strawberry) accompanied by subtle spices like clove and green pepper. More complex notes of incense, black tea, and blood orange appear upon aeration, followed by herbal hints of sage, rosemary, and menthol.
-
Palate: On the palate, this Pinot Noir offers a vibrant attack and beautiful concentration. The flavors of red fruits blend with an elegant tannic structure, while the balance between freshness and roundness is perfect. The tannins are remarkably fine, supporting a long and complex finish marked by notes of wild herbs and elderberry.
The The Hilt Rouge "Estate Pinot Noir" 2018 pairs wonderfully with delicate and refined dishes such as roasted duck breast with red fruits, herb-stuffed quail, pork tenderloin en croûte, or even a soft cheese platter, notably a matured brie.
Its elegant structure and complex aromas also make it an excellent wine to enjoy on its own during a moment of contemplation.
