Description
Venezia Giulia DOC "Ribolla" 2014 of Domaine Gravner
Gravner is an evocative name among wine lovers all over the world. This name resonates in particular as one of the world's greatest winemakers of orange wines, a very trendy style of wine these days, and for obvious reasons. The domaine gravner is located in the north-east of Italy, in Veneto-Friuli, a cult region for macerated whites.
The story of the Gravners began in 1900 with the first vines planted in their village of Oslavia, in the Friuli hills bordering Austria, Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. Patriarch Josko is the one who has raised the estate to the big leagues.
After experimenting with "classic" ageing in oak barrels or cement, he was one of the first to return to the sources of the ancestral methods of the region, namely a maceration of the local grape variety (Ribolla) in buried amphorae, the famous "Qveri" (which can be found for example in Georgia). Everything changed in the colour, texture and taste of Gravner's wines, the opposite of the style of the wines of the 80s and 90s. The situation has changed since then... and Gravner has become a cult estate.
With its 33 hectares of vines, the family produces around 20,000 coveted bottles worldwide. Their approach is minimally interventionist: the vines are organic and the wines are vinified with indigenous yeasts with very little sulphur. Patience is the ma word, as the wines are only put on the market after 7 years: 1 year in amphora, 6 years in oak barrels and 6 months in bottles.
Ready-to-drink wines when they are put on the market, a rarity and a chance to discover all the magic of Ribolla and its exuberance of citrus, stone fruits, peach, apricot, orange, honey and rose petal. Aromatic intensity and sharp acidity are the main markers of this wine to be tasted at least once in its life!
