Description
Red wineVolnay 1er cru "Pitures" 2021 Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur
Bitouzet-Prieur : a compound name symbolizing the merger of two families of winegrowers:
Bitouzet on his father's side, a native of Volnay, Prior of Meursault on his mother's side, for the white wines
6th generation of winegrowers, François Bitouzet-Prieur arrived on the family estate in 2005 and has been managing it since 2012, maintaining this precious duality on an area of 13 hectares.
François is fortunate to cultivate an extraordinary plot of land that he has the responsibility to preserve. Vincent Bitouzet, François' father, had completely stopped the use of herbicides and other products harmful to the life of the soil in the 94-95 vintage, returning to mechanical maintenance of the soil by scratching and ploughing supplemented by an addition of organic ration in the form of compost. This approach was continued by François with a few trials in organic farming in 2009 and then implemented on the entire estate in 2013, for a certification of his 2023 vintage.
This Volnay 1er Cru "Pitures" 2021 comes from a plot that is located south of the village of Volnay, near Pommard, next to the famous Clos des Ducs. The slope of the land is very steep (40m difference in altitude) hence the difference in rock between the top and bottom of the plot. Hard limestone on the bottom and marly limestone above. The soil is quite cold and composed of clay and heavy, rich and deep limestone. The "Pitures" is the most robust of the Volnays of the estate, rather typical of Pommard. It joins the wines of Pommard because it is quite opulent while keeping the finesse of the Volnays.
Intense red colour with a slightly woody nose, with aromas of slightly candied red fruits and violets. It is a powerful, rich and well-balanced wine. The tannins soften as they age. Very nice length.
It will go wonderfully well with roasted meats (mutton chops or shoulders, hare with cherries) and mature cheeses.
