Description
Pierre Galet's Encyclopedic Dictionary of Grape Varieties and Their Synonyms is a fundamental and exhaustive tool, unique in its kind. With 1200 pages, over 4000 photos and drawings by the author and other collaborators, it allows for a clear and precise identification of grape varieties in the field by providing all the keys to recognize them. It indicates synonyms and includes regional names with their geographical distribution. Almost all of the world's 10,000 grape varieties are thus listed and analyzed: a monumental work, the result of a lifetime dedicated to the science of grape varieties, ampelography. This definitive, major, and indispensable edition is of paramount importance for viticulture professionals as well as wine enthusiasts. Pierre Galet is considered the father of modern ampelography. He established himself as an expert in ampelography as early as the 1950s (Grape Varieties and '1qnobles de France, 4 volumes, 1956-1964) and published a Practical Ampelography Handbook in 1952, regularly reissued and updated. He is the author of numerous authoritative books on vines and viticulture. His works have been published worldwide. His research was crucial for the reconstruction of vineyards after the phylloxera crisis, and it is high time that the recognition of the work of this "field" ampelographer - more of a "finder" than a "seeker," in his own words - finally matches his essential role.
