Description

Table of contents for issue 50 Autumn 2022 SPECIAL NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES Often described as the most tannic and powerful wines of the Côte de Nuits, the wines from this 310-hectare appellation, 97% of which are red, actually exhibit a great diversity of styles, especially in the area bordering Vosne-Romanée. With its 41 premier crus, Nuits-Saint-Georges offers wines at a "reasonable" price for enthusiasts. Here is a non-exhaustive selection and an overview of its most famous climates. CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE For Florence and Daniel Cathiard, it was a second life as fulfilling as the first. Perhaps an even greater challenge. A significant investment, not just financially. In their hands, this gem of Graves has been transformed into an enchanted and enchanting place. BAGHERAWINES In just a few years, it has established itself as the talk of the town: since the landmark sale of Henri Jayer's cellar, it is the auction house for rare wines everyone is talking about. Its founders, Michael Ganne and Julie Carpentier, shared their philosophy with us and opened the doors to the cellar of the Cros Parantoux winemaker, with the kind permission of the master's daughter, Lydie Jayer. CHÂTEAU DE LA CHAIZE A historic domain, a classified chateau, a past glory: La Chaize was dozing off while Beaujolais, under the influence of a young generation of winemakers, reconnects with its terroir. Its new owner has embarked on a titanic project to restore the property to its former glory and its wines of the region. DOMAINE DU PAS DE L'ESCALETTE 20 years ago, determined to embrace their winemaking destiny, Julien and Delphine Zernott landed here. In this wild beauty, they never imagined that the wines could be anything but good. Armed with unwavering tenacity and strong convictions, they have crafted some of the best wines from Terrasses du Larzac. MARCIANO ESTATE A gem of Napa Valley, a wine still unknown, under the radar of specialists, but benefiting from the attention of top winemakers. Because its owner, Maurice Marciano, the co-founder of the "Guess" empire, poured all his passion into this unique venture. Report at the foot of the Mayacamas. CHAMPAGNE GOSSET The oldest of the houses, founded in 1584, at a time when the bubble is not yet the very definition of "Champagne wine", produces high-quality cuvées where purity and the enduring style have managed to seduce enthusiasts. A look back at the grand history of this unparalleled little house. SPECIAL SOUTHWEST An immense territory sharing a common culture and diverse wines, the Southwest is full of talent, stories, and native grape varieties forming a land of fascinating contrasts and sublime nectars between the Pyrenees, the Atlantic Ocean, the Garonne Valley, and the Massif Central. Committed winemakers exercise their expertise there, offering enthusiasts great wines from unique places. We met them.
