Description

200 domaines visited and described, 800 wines reviewed, From Chablis to the Côte d’Or, from the Côte Chalonnaise to Mâconnais.

Wines and Vineyards of Burgundy is an introduction to the burgundy of wine, a detailed analysis of the complex system of appellations and climats backed by centuries of history.

The authors, Camillo Favaro and Giampaolo Gravina, after years of experience in Burgundy, renew their journey through the vineyards where the concept of terroir was born, visiting emerging vignerons and cult wineries of legendary status.

This new edition of the book - first published in 2012- includes integrated and extended chapters which provide readers with a compass to find their way through the maze of Burgundy wines.

As compared with the previous edition, the new 2018 book extends the field of “research” from the Côte d’Or to the whole of Burgundy, including the Hautes Côte de Beaune and de Nuit, the Chablis to the north and the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais to the south.

The wine appellations are listed following the north-to-south direction and are divided into 13 groups according to a criterion of territorial continuity. So, the first of the 13 groups includes the area of Chablis and Auxerrois; the second comprises Marsannay, Fixin and Gevrey Chambertin; the third Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny and so on until the thirteenth group which focuses on the Mâconnais.

A concise text introduces each group, describing the key features of the landscape of each appellation, which is identified with reference to the color maps drawn by Sylvain Pitiot and Jean-Charles Servant. A profile of the Domaines visited by the authors follows, including a description of the winery and wines produced. To be precise, 200 wineries visited and 800 wines reviewed. From Vincent Dauvissat to Thomas Pico, from Lalou Bize-Leroy to Emmanuel Giboulot, from Domaine de La Romanée-Conti to Benjamin Leroux, from Emmanuel Rouget to Cécile Tremblay, from Arnaud Ente to Jean-Marc Roulot, just to mention a few of them.

The idea of a book on Burgundy wines came about in 2007, when Camillo Favaro and the ArtevinoStudio staff ventured on a road trip across Burgundy. They then published a first version of the book titled Vini e Percorsi di Borgogna, the first guidebook to Burgundy wines ever written in Italian. In 2012, Giampaolo Gravina, a well-known Italian wine journalist, collaborated with Camillo Favaro on the first edition of Wines and Vineyards of Burgundy.

The rich and ambitious 2018 edition was translated into English by Burton Anderson, the famous American wine writer who, starting from the eighties, introduced the world to Italian wine. He worked side by side with Joanie Bonfiglio, a passionate wine professional who sells Italian and French wines in the US.
