Kei Shiogai embodies Burgundy in perpetual motion.

This young man commands respect through his journey of perseverance and hard work. Originally from Tokyo, he discovered wine in Japan and then in New Zealand through various jobs in wine.

Eager to work in the vineyard and in the cellar, he stayed in Burgundy from 2014 with a host family in Dijon. He took the opportunity to learn French and obtain wine diplomas. This was followed by experiences in prestigious estates, as a vineyard worker.

Fascinated by the great historical winemakers of Burgundy (Henri Jayer, Bernard Noblet...), Kei has managed to create his own estate, with the purchase of grapes from very beautiful terroirs, particularly in Pommard and Gevrey-Chambertin.

He closely follows the work in the vineyard, focusing on Millerand grapes and small yields, a guarantee of concentration. Then he takes care of the grapes himself as soon as the harvest is done: meticulous sorting, indigenous yeasts, maceration in whole harvests, regular pumping over, maximum risk-taking to obtain a very original wine in terms of aroma and texture. He selects barrels carefully and limits the use of sulphur as much as possible (only after malo made).

Kei claims his own style of wines, which he wants to be both purely classic Burgundian but also wildly original. The maturation is long (two winters) to give the wine time. The result is stunning: intensity and aromatic concentration, silky texture, tannins that are both powerful and delicate, great length, floral and herbal touches, a complex infusion of Pinot. Wines that will undoubtedly make a big impact!

Due to the low volume of wines produced, we cannot sell its wines online, but we invite you to contact our wine merchant team by email to find out the availability of Kei Shiogai wines: sdv@athenaeum.com
