La Découverte many remains of the Gallo-Roman era in Volnay testifies to the antiquity of this wine-growing village which evolved over the centuries to become the one we know today. The history of Volnay is both that of the great and the humble. As you can see, many of the terroirs have their origins in facts relating to the history of Burgundy, intimately intertwined with the cultural practices of the Volnaysiens. Rich in their past, generation after generation, the winegrowers of Volnay pass on a unique heritage that their ancestors left them. From the Benedictines to the Cistercians, from the dukes of Burgundy to the kings of France, from the bourgeois to the vineyard workers, all marked with one stone their attachment to this village. This study will try, as far as possible, to show what the terroirs represent for this village, renowned in Burgundy and known throughout the world for the quality of these wines and the beauty of its site. Before approaching each vineyard plot in this village, it is important to define what a 'climate' is in Burgundy. This term, commonly used by winemakers and professionals, takes into account various criteria, the study of which will make it possible to understand the specificity of the Burgundy vineyard. We will try to show that the origin of the name Volnay is inspired by the particular position that the village occupies in the fault relief of the Burgundian coast...
