Description
In half a century, rural society has undergone a stunning transformation, the effects of which quickly and violently manifested in the landscapes. While land consolidations reshaped the territories according to new agricultural practices, standardization reached the buildings, now far removed from the diversity of traditional constructions. Although this outcome is well known, the reasons and methods that produced it remain opaque.
Through the evolution of buildings, this work by Hervé Cividino reveals the political, economic, and regulatory mechanisms behind the transformation of rural areas during the second half of the 20th century. Driven by various actors with diverse motivations, from the state to private interest holders, and including local territories, these new modes of organizing the countryside deeply and rapidly alter the landscapes, as well as the sociology and organization of the rural world.
This journey through the history of agricultural architecture, richly illustrated and documented, thus exposes the complex process of modernization, from the progress ideologies stemming from the "Thirty Glorious Years" to the emergence of environmental issues, in which the resistance and clever adjustments of tradition's heirs played a significant role.
