Editorial: CRAVING HEAT
The vine loves the sun.
Since its domestication about 10,000 years ago, it has settled in sunny areas following human migrations. It found a preferred terroir around the Mediterranean in a hot climate. Then, when it took root in cooler regions like Burgundy or Germany, the best plots have always been those facing south, towards the sun.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the vine, like us, must wait before enjoying the summer heat. That's why this new issue takes you to warm terroirs.
Put on sunscreen, head to Sicily.
Between the hot wind from the Sahara and the boiling lava from Mount Etna, this wine region produces balanced and fresh wines. Julien Marchand reveals all its secrets.
While we dream of sunshine, more and more winemakers seek shade. The climate is warming up, and they want to bring freshness to their wine while reducing the alcohol content. This approach is desirable both for the wine's balance on the palate and to promote moderate consumption. We crave wine at 10% or 12%, and it's possible to find it, even in sunny regions like Alsace, Trentino-Alto Adige, and the Okanagan. Can you imagine, these regions receive as much sunlight as southern France!
Some of you may be reading this issue with your feet in the sand, somewhere under the Caribbean sun. In this place, vines give way to sugar cane in the making of rum, known as the wine of the tropics. Complex, spicy, and warm, this spirit fills the glass with sunshine. That's why it's in high demand all over the world.
As you prepare a strong ti' punch, we invite you to savor this issue of ExtraBrut without moderation.
The Brut.
