In the last decade, 169 new grape varieties have been added to the National Register of Wine Grape Varieties, of which 112 are native. This highlights the importance of the latter in the Italian wine landscape, both to better valorize the native grape-landscape connection and to differentiate the wine offer and preserve biodiversity, which is essential in countering genetic erosion for future improvement programs. The volume describes 126 grape varieties, originating from specific territories of all Italian regions and with limited diffusion, i.e., not exceeding 200 hectares of cultivated land, organized in summary sheets. In addition to the morphological and attitudinal characterization, each of them is accompanied by historical information, as well as appropriate photographic documentation. Although only a portion of the native grape varieties is currently cultivated to produce wine grapes, the book aims to be a first, original compendium on the main limitedly diffused and employed genetic vine entities present in all Italian territories, and to be a companion for potential journeys to discover different or even unique wines from all of Italy.
