Description
The Wines of Austria by Stephen Brook is an essential book for wine enthusiasts who wish to discover the viticultural richness of Austria. This landlocked country in the heart of Europe produces a wide range of quality wines. In this second edition, Brook takes his readers on a journey through the Austrian wine regions, where exceptional wines, ranging from whites to reds, including rosés, amber wines, and natural sparkling wines, are produced.
After the wine scandal of the 1980s, many Austrian producers took the time to refocus and innovate. Today, Austria is a versatile producer with renowned wines such as Grüner Veltliner, capable of rivaling the best white wines from Burgundy. In regions like Niederösterreich, the vineyards are mainly located along the Danube Valley, producing high-quality whites, while the southeast of the region specializes in reds from Austrian varieties.
The Burgenland, in the east, benefits from a warm and humid climate conducive to the production of botrytized sweet wines. The Steiermark, with its lush landscapes, produces fresh whites and unique rosés, such as Schilcher. Finally, Vienna, the Austrian capital, boasts over 600 hectares of vineyards, where the famous Gemischter Satz are sold in traditional Heurigen.
The author details the climate, terroir, and winemaking methods in each of the 16 major wine regions. This edition has been fully updated, with wine tastings up to the 2018 vintage. Additionally, a chapter on the main grape varieties and a summary of the vintages from 1963 to 2018 are also included.
