Description
The patchwork formed by numerous parcels, called Climats, in the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, gives the great wines of Burgundy their original character!
These Climats were registered in Unesco’s World Heritage List in July 2015.
They are the result of a 2,000-year hard work carried out by men who have known how to take advantage of the incredible diversity of geographic and climatic conditions to create an exceptional mosaic of top-ranked Crus that are famous worldwide.
It is the first time that this story is told exhaustively, displaying the detailed maps of the 35 viticultural villages and giving comprehensive explanations about the origin and meaning of the 1,551 Climats and lieux-dits names!
As Bernard Pivot nicely says: “In Burgundy, when you talk about the ‘Climat’, you don’t look up at the sky, but you look down to the soil”
- In the first part, the wine maps of all the Climats and localities of the 35 communes of the great wines of Burgundy are presented: The Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. They are accompanied by the list of Climats and localities classified by appellations: Communales, Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, the surface area of each, the color of the wine produced and the names of the winegrowers operating these Grands Crus.
- In the second part, the origin and meaning of each of the 1,551 names of Climats and localities are explained for the first time, in a clear and lively style. The division of the Burgundian vineyard into so many plots constitutes one of its originalities. Each plot has its characteristics, its identity, its history, its name which makes it different from the other plots. And it is to this infinite diversity that this book bears witness.
