Inaugurated as part of the UNESCO Chair on Culture and Traditions of Wine, the first Clos-Vougeot Encounters aim to approach wine as a cultural product, a carrier of civilization, whose enlightened consumption is a true art of living and a philosophy linked to conviviality and sharing, undeniably humanistic values.
Devoted in 2007 to the theme: "Wine and Rituals", these Encounters brought together international specialists who highlighted the role of wine in religious rituals since antiquity, as well as the close connections between wine and celebration in very different times and places, and the importance of tasting rituals and the very specific vocabulary they have inspired.
This multidisciplinary reflection showed the importance of wine in human efforts towards social and religious integration, its impact on socio-cultural memory and individual construction, as according to Gaston Bachelard's profound expression: "One who meditates on wine learns to express oneself".
