Description
Before the first publication of Wine Tasting in 1968, appreciating fine wine was a hobby enjoyed only by a select few: there was no established methodology for comparing one wine to another, and no common language for tasters to exchange notes or share their knowledge. Michael Broadbent revolutionized this. By following his meticulous wine tasting approach, which considers everything we see, smell, and taste, he made it possible for everyone to understand and appreciate the true qualities of wine, launching an industry that has since flourished.
This special Commemorative Edition of Wine Tasting features the original text from the 1975 edition, along with introductory pieces by Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson, Steven Spurrier, and the late Gerard Basset, all reflecting on Michael's significant impact on the world of wine. Additionally, there are contributions from Paul Bowker and Fritz Hatton on Michael as a wine auctioneer, as well as personal insights from his son Bartholomew and granddaughter Leaf on Michael as a family man. The book also includes three essays: one by Hugh Johnson on how Michael, as a writer, transformed the world of wine writing, another by Charles Marsden-Smedley on his achievements as an artist, and a third by Jonathan Freeman-Attwood on Michael's love for music, both as a listener and a skilled performer.
The world of wine has evolved tremendously in the 50 years since Wine Tasting was first introduced. However, the pioneering tasting principles established by Michael remain as relevant today as they were then, proving invaluable to anyone seeking to discover the enchantment of wine for themselves. A true classic.
