Description
Veneto DOC "Primofiore" 2020 of Domaine Giuseppe Quintarelli
Quintarelli, a name that resonates like a myth with all wine lovers! While the family's winemaking origins date back to the 1920s, the estate's growth took off in the 1960s and 70s thanks to Giuseppe, a legend of Italian viticulture and in particular Amarone, the king wine of Veneto. Leaving Verona along small steep roads that criss-cross the steep slopes planted with vineyards and olive trees, you will arrive at the beautiful house of the Quintarelli family. Giuseppe has worked tirelessly to bring his wines to the highest level of perfection. The address is now mythical and still unmissable today. Although he passed away in 2012, Giuseppe's work is perpetuated by his children and grandchildren. The approach remains traditional, viticulture has not changed for decades and the methods remain imbued with peasant common sense: no weedkiller, as few inputs as possible and tillage only when necessary. Yields are kept to a minimum by rigorous pruning and green harvesting. The harvest takes place quite late, at good ripeness, which often requires three passes through the vines, the grapes being harvested by hand. For Amarone, the family's cult wine, the grapes are dried for six months in drying chambers. In the winery, the handling is intended to be as gentle as possible in order to obtain finesse and natural concentration, without coarse tannins. The ageing periods in oak barrels are very long, between 6 and 8 years for all the wines. Production is deliberately limited to 60,000 btles (i.e. 12ha of vines), one straw for a wine that has been dubbed all over the world. The result of all this attention to detail? Timeless wines that age wonderfully whatever the vintage.
The Primofiore cuvée from the Quintarelli family has become a classic appreciated by all connoisseurs. There is a blend of local grape varieties (Corvina and Corvinone) and French grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc) in equal parts. An impressive introduction due to its power and aromatic volume, with intense notes of black fruits, blackberries and plums, all framed by perfectly integrated tannins and an acidity that lengthens the mouth. The whole thing is mature, supple and accessible right now. A harmonious wine that has become a must-have for the aesthetes of this cult estate!
