Description
The historian Pierre Gresser tackles a very little-known aspect of the history of vineyards in the Jura region here. A recognized specialist in the Middle Ages, and an active member of the Center for the History of Vineyards and Wine in Beaune, he has combed through the accounting records of the properties of the dukes-counts of Burgundy kept at the Departmental Archives of Côte-d'Or. His goal: to identify everything related to their domain in the vineyards and thus trace the history of the wines they produced from Salins to Montmorot. This unprecedented research sheds new light on the birth of viticulture and wine-making in the Jura region. The management by the dukes-counts of Burgundy of their Jura domain indeed helped structure the landscapes, identify the most suitable soils for viticulture, improve farming practices, and produce renowned wines that gave prestige to the vineyards now known as Revermont.
After a reminder of the natural settings and the outstanding owners that the dukes-counts of Burgundy were, the wines are described in all their forms, not forgetting the containers in which they were stored and transported. It was a sought-after product that the counts consumed, gave away, but above all sold. In addition to these three uses, others, more unexpected, should be added, not to mention the role that wine played in the divine office. In addition to the text, a rich iconography immerses the reader in the medieval context while revealing the beauty of the vineyard landscapes and the architectural quality of an unknown heritage.
The author, Pierre Gresser, was born on August 30, 1941, in Lons-le-Saunier. An agrégé in history, retired professor of Universities (Middle Ages), he devoted all his research to the Franche-Comté region in the 14th and 15th centuries. Author of numerous articles and seven individual books, he has also contributed to collective works. Among the most recent ones are: "Le Château-Chalon, un vin, son terroir et ses hommes", Lons-le-Saunier, Méta Jura, 2013 - Gonzales (Antonio), Gresser (Pierre), "Nouvelle histoire de la Franche-Comté", vol. I, Pontarlier, éditions du Belvédère, 2014 - Bichet (Vincent), Garnier (Emmanuel), Gresser (Pierre), Magny (Michel), Vermot-Desroches (Bruno), "Histoire du climat en Franche-Comté du Jurassique à nos jours", Pontarlier, éditions du Belvédère, 2015. In 2005, Pierre Gresser was awarded an honorary doctorate in letters from the University of Neuchâtel.
