At the twilight of the 19th century, the phylloxera devastates French vineyards. In the Lyon region, Philidor is desperate: his vines are affected by the terrible disease and he doesn't know if he can save the family property. Despite the difficulties, he finds some comfort in the emerald green eyes of the beautiful Appoline. The respite is short-lived, as he soon finds himself in a violent conflict with Antoine, a distant relative who wants to completely destroy the contaminated vineyard. The day after their dispute, Antoine and another man are found murdered at the estate, with a rope around their necks. Memories of betrayal resurface and all suspicions fall on Philidor, who must fight to prove his innocence and not lose the family inheritance.
