This book describes drunkenness and its succession of states of consciousness under the empire of wine.

This is the translation of an oral intervention in a cycle of conferences on wine at the end of the 19th century in Italy.

This progressive alteration of feelings and ideas, this continuous succession of different states of consciousness by which one passes from the serenity that follows the first sips to the ardent exaltation of the last toasts is in itself a psychological event so strange and so fruitful for the study of human nature that it will never be sufficiently meditated either by the philosopher or by the artist.
