Description
The impact of climate change on vineyards is now indisputable. The socio-economic stakes are enormous worldwide. Norwegians are planting vines, English sparkling wines are doing well, and the Germans are watching closely. Everything was fine in the wine world until the turn of the century. The wine was good, but warming was at work: alcohol levels were rising, sugar followed, and acidity decreased. In the vineyards, everything became more complicated: water stress, frost, drought, diseases. The author met with specialists and winemakers in all regions. Grape varieties will have to change, as well as the appellation system. Winemakers are trying to adapt. They are turning to ancient grape varieties, using genetics, testing hybrid vines resistant to diseases and extreme weather. In order to prioritize quality, they are transitioning to organic and biodynamic methods. We will (perhaps) drink wine in 2050. Another wine, and it will come at a price! The 45th parallel will be the dividing line for wines. But Brittany is ready, and Normandy has already started planting.
