France is a major producer of alcohol. It ranks among the top twenty countries in the world in terms of alcohol consumption. Considered a legal drug, alcohol is studied by sociologists, political scientists, doctors, historians, and economists. To address the various legal aspects of this societal phenomenon, a symposium, the proceedings of which are reproduced in this book, took place on November 7 and 8, 2017, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Artois. Drawing a distinction between the commercial aspects of alcohol and its consumption, the symposium brought together contributions on topics as diverse as production, advertising, taxation, sales, prevention, enforcement, and the consequences of alcohol consumption.
