Description

Is science biased? What is pseudo-science and how has it affected the world of wine? How can a better understanding of science help wine producers tackle the major challenges currently facing the planet? These are just some of the questions explored in this book.

From one of the leading experts in vine science, this thoughtful and sometimes provocative narrative traces the history of the vine. Discover how grapes appeared, how they evolved over time, and how they traveled across the globe, creating the varieties we know and love today.

With his unique perspective on the history of the vine, Professor Attilio Scienza explains how our planet has changed and evolved over time, and how vines have mutated and traveled during the long geological development of the Earth.

This book traces the journey of the first grape growers to the scientists who learned to identify, classify, and crossbreed vines, up to recent advances in DNA profiling. By exploring the often controversial history, fake news, and ethical debates that have accompanied science, Scienza examines the biology of the grape through a sociological lens.

Scienza also invites us to think about the future, particularly the implications of genetic engineering and biotechnology. He questions the morality of human intervention in the natural world and asks what lies ahead in the quest for the perfect grape.

Attilio Scienza is a Full Professor at the University of Milan, where he has taught vine genetic improvement. He is the author of 350 scientific publications and 15 books—both academic and aimed at a wider audience—on topics related to the description of grape varieties as well as their relationship with the environment and their historical origin.
