Description

Wine, a key element in the soldiers' lives in the trenches.

1916. In the Marne Valley, French soldiers stuck in the mud of the trenches gather courage with a daily ration of wine. However, many find this beverage undrinkable. Some claim that the good wine from Burgundy is reserved for officers, while soldiers are left with inferior wine! Among them, Gaston, a young man whose father was a winemaker, takes the debate to heart. The different regional affiliations related to wine production sometimes fuel tensions among the soldiers who remain attached to their land. So, when the merchant, the civilian merchant, comes to supply the trenches, Gaston orders his ration avoiding the absinthe that others crave... Meanwhile, in Reims, kilometers of cellars shelter a treasure that the shells have not yet destroyed: champagne!
The collection expands with an album that revisits the wine history of France, caught in the turmoil of the Great War of 1914-1918. A dark period for production during which the global wine market takes a turn. A well-documented portrait that pays tribute to the diversity of grape varieties and reminds us of the wartime efforts of women during the conflict.
