Nothing intoxicates like the wine of misfortune. Ferdinand is a slacker, a shirker who feigns disability to escape the war and avoid ending up on the front lines, in the trenches facing the Germans. A ruthless profiteer, he made a fortune in the trade of dubious and adulterated wine that he sells to the army, even going as far as sabotaging the competition to be the sole supplier to the soldiers. While he sells his wine near the front line, Ferdinand finds himself involuntarily engaged in the conflict and becomes, along with his unfortunate companions, a prisoner in a trench caught between two fires.
