Nothing intoxicates like the wine of misfortune. Ferdinand is a slacker, a shirker who feigns disability to escape the war and avoid ending up on the front lines, in the trenches facing the Germans. A ruthless profiteer, he made a fortune in the trade of dubious and adulterated wine that he sells to the army, even going as far as sabotaging the competition to be the sole supplier to the soldiers.
