Description
La Grande Champagne is one of the six crus that make up the Cognac Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC). Considered the birthplace of the best eaux-de-vie in the world, this little-known territory is revealed through the writings of a collective of passionate authors, rich in their diverse disciplines.
From A to Z, they cover all aspects of this little gem of Charente, covering 13,200 hectares of vineyards: geology, terroirs, personalities, landscapes, distillation, heritage…
Beyond the vineyard, Grande Champagne is a true conservatory of Romanesque art: almost every village has its square bell tower emerging from a sea of vineyards.
Grande Champagne is also, thanks to remarkable preservation of the vernacular heritage, a memory of yesteryear: washhouses, wells, and fountains recall the lifestyle of the past.
You can also discover numerous "logis". Simple farms surrounded by viticultural buildings or remarkable manors, they are recognized by their porches, rarely open and often beautifully sculpted. Here, indeed, they cultivate both the vine and the love of secrecy.
These bucolic, gently rolling landscapes have nevertheless known dark times. But, during the phylloxera crisis, the Champagnauds were able to cope.
By what mystery, in the century-old cellars, do the Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie stored in oak barrels have an aging ability that sets them apart from other crus? Find the answer in this Little Encyclopedia dedicated to Grande Champagne at the heart of cognac, the second in a series launched by François Baudez Editions (also the publisher of The Encyclopedia of Cognac), following the Little Encyclopedia of Talmont.
