This object was a working utensil used in all Burgundian cellars. Its origin goes back a long way; around the year one thousand. The monks of the very famous Abbey of Cluny used it; we can see an authentic one at the Ochier Museum in Cluny.

Description

The Cellar Rat had a double function: first, to illuminate the cellar, and secondly, the colour of the flame indicated that there were gas releases, indicating that the wine was undergoing a chemical transformation.

This object had a very studied, very traditional shape:

  • Its flat bottom allowed for immediate and stable installation.
  • Its handle (the rat tail) gave an easy and secure grip; Its shape allowed it to be hung from a nail and mainly hung on the rim of oak barrels.
  • The spiral was used to store the remains of candles.
  • The small pusher, turning in this spiral, pulls up the ends of the candles as they burn out...

Maybe it's what used to be called "saving money".

The "Cave Rat" is a candle holder. It is a handicrafted object entirely handmade, it is functional and very decorative.

An object that is both functional and decorative, made by a Burgundian craftsman: Jean-Yves Bouillot, ironworker creator of art, approved by the Historic Monuments.
