Description

Jura has a vineyard of about 2500 hectares spread over an 80 km long and 3 to 8 km wide strip, on the flank of the first reliefs of the massif. Though small in size, it is unique for its very particular wines, often made from local grape varieties. This uniqueness is due to the nature of its viticultural soils, dominated by marly terrains, enriched with scree deposits from the limestone cliff to which it is backed.

Illustrated with numerous photographs and explanatory diagrams on the geology of the subsoil, this book allows you to discover the richness of the Jura wine landscapes and understand the organization of its terroirs. Useful for winemakers, it will also satisfy the curiosity and interest of the public in the vine. Indeed, quality wine enthusiasts are increasingly less satisfied with mere tasting. They want to know the entire chain of elements and practices that lead to wine. With the development of wine tourism, this strong demand for explanation is now coupled with the desire to know the setting in which the vineyards were established. Tasting a wine also means linking it to the land from which it comes and the landscape within which it was developed. This book meets this expectation.

The book is organized into two parts:

  1. The first part presents the geological history of the Jura vineyard and its original characteristics. Occupying the western edge of the Jura, the existence of the vineyard is due to the presence of a geological rupture formed by the boundary between the Jura and the Bresse Graben. The great originality of the Jura vineyard lies in the dominance of marly lands in its geological substrate. Despite the homogeneity of this substrate, the Jura vineyard presents a great variability of its soils, brought by the complexes of superficial formations spread over the slopes during recent Quaternary periods. These particular arrangements are the result of a long geological history, the founding episode of which is the overlap of the western edge of the Jura on Bresse.
  2. The second part details the geological characteristics of the viticultural terroirs, commune by commune. Eight viticultural zones have been identified from north to south, each presenting common characteristics. They are, in order of presentation:
  • Northern Vineyard zone, appellation "Côtes du Jura",
  • Appellation "Arbois" zone;
  • Poligny zone, appellation "Côtes du Jura";
  • Arlay/Voiteur zone, appellation "Côtes du Jura";
  • Appellation "Château-Chalon" zone;
  • Appellation "L'Étoile" zone;
  • Lons-le-Saunier zone, appellation "Côtes du Jura",
  • Revermont zone, appellation "Côtes du Jura".
