Description

Discover The Wines of Austria by Stephen Brook, an in-depth exploration of Austrian wines. This guide covers the major wine regions, grape varieties, and top producers. With over 40 years of experience, Brook offers a detailed analysis of the climate, terroir, and winemaking techniques. An essential read for all wine lovers wanting to know more about Austrian wines.

Description (max 21844 characters): The Wines of Austria by Stephen Brook is an indispensable reference for both wine enthusiasts and professionals. This book explores the rich diversity of Austrian wines, produced in a landlocked country at the heart of Europe. Although the wine scandal of the 1980s caused a temporary setback, it also allowed serious winemakers to focus and innovate.

In this second edition, Brook takes readers on a wine journey through Austria's best wine regions. Today, Austria produces not only fabulous white wines and sweet wines but also red wines, rosés, amber wines, Sekts, and natural sparkling wines. Most viticulture occurs in the eastern part of the country, in four main regions.

In the largest region, Niederösterreich, most vineyards are located along the Danube Valley, where white wines such as Grüner Veltliners are produced, rivaling Burgundies, while the southeastern part of the region specializes in red wines from Austrian varieties. The eastern region of Burgenland is warm and humid, making it ideal for producing botrytized sweet wines. The lush and bucolic Steiermark produces invigorating and refreshing white wines as well as a unique rosé, Schilcher.

The capital, Vienna, has more than 600 hectares of vineyards, with a large portion of the wine produced sold in the city's numerous Heurigen, and is also the capital of Gemischter Satz. Brook provides a detailed account of the climate, terroir, and winemaking in each of the 16 main wine regions. Selected producers have been fully updated for this edition, with many wines tasted up to the 2018 vintage.

A chapter is also dedicated to the main grape varieties and a summary of vintages from 1963 to 2018 is included.
