Description

The division of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune into multiple parcels, known as Climats, is what makes the great wines of Burgundy so unique!

These Climats were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2015.

They are the result of 2,000 years of human labor that made the most of the extreme diversity of geographical and climatic conditions to create an exceptional mosaic of hierarchized and internationally renowned Crus!

This story is told for the first time in a comprehensive way through detailed maps of the 35 wine-producing communes and by explaining the origin and meaning of the names of the 1551 Climats and lieu-dits!

Meursault, Clos de Vougeot, Chevalier-Montrachet, Le Corton, Vosne-Romanée, Les Perrières, Les Amoureuses, Etournelies,...
All these names of prestigious wines that appear on the labels of Burgundy wines have a charm, a mystery, an oddity that arouses the curiosity of those who discover them! They are names of Crus, but above all of villages, Climats, and lieu-dits that were given long ago. Understanding their origin and meaning helps to better understand the history and ways of life of the people who, for over 2,000 years, have lived in Burgundy and have contributed, through their work and understanding of the land, to shape this exceptional vineyard.

This book is composed of two different and complementary parts:

  • In the first part, the wine maps of all Climats and lieu-dits of the 35 communes of the great wines of Burgundy are presented: La Côte de Nuits and La Côte de Beaune. They are accompanied by a list of classified Climats and lieu-dits by appellations: Regional, Premier Crus, and Grand Crus, including their surface area, the color of the wine produced, and the names of the winemakers managing the Grand Crus.

  • In the second part, for the first time, the origin and meaning of each of the 1551 names of Climats and lieu-dits are explained in a clear and lively style. The division of the Burgundy vineyard into so many parcels is one of its unique aspects. Each parcel has its characteristics, identity, history, and name that sets it apart from the others. This book bears witness to this infinite diversity.

In Burgundy, when we talk about Climats, "we do not look up at the sky, we look down at the earth," as beautifully stated by Bernard Pivot.
