Description

Vinocolor: Wine Color Chart is an unprecedented work that revolutionizes the way we approach wine. Instead of focusing solely on labels or taste characteristics, this book suggests choosing a wine based on its color. By observing the appearance of a wine, one can infer its terroir, its grape variety, and the care taken by the winemakers. The color thus becomes the first contact, the first emotion that one feels even before tasting the wine.

This ambitious project was born from the collaboration of four passionate friends, led by Gala Colette and Victor Coutard, who decided to create the first... wine color chart. To achieve this, they selected, tasted, and photographed 120 vintages from 15 different countries. Each wine was carefully chosen to represent the diversity of grape varieties and terroirs, often highly concentrated, from the wine regions.

The creation of this color chart required meticulous and complex work. The authors designed a darkroom specifically intended to capture the wine color without distorting it. This technique allows for capturing the substance, texture, and intensity of each wine without altering them through reflections or overexposure. The result is a faithful and poetic representation of the best that nature, the terroir, and the winemakers' expertise can offer.

Vinocolor It is not just a visual work, it is also an invitation to rediscover wine with a fresh perspective. The detailed technical sheets for each vintage provide a wealth of information on wine production, most of which are made with little or no chemicals. This book highlights authentic wines that respect the environment and viticultural traditions.

Browsing through this color chart, the reader is transported on a journey through the vineyards of the world, from the deep red of a Burgundy to the golden yellow of an Alsace wine, passing through the subtle shades of a Georgian orange wine. Each page is a celebration of the diversity and beauty of wines, which are revealed here in a new light.

Vinocolor is much more than just a book. It is a tribute to the diversity of wines, "...to the creativity of winemakers, and to the art of tasting with the eyes. Whether you are a wine enthusiast or a professional, this unique color chart will allow you to discover and appreciate wine in an unprecedented way, letting the color guide your choices."

Meeting with Gala Colette and Victor Coutard, artist and author

In the company of photographer Paul Lehr and journalist Matthieu Le Goff, they have just co-signed. Vinocolor. A wine color chart that is as pleasing as it is instructive. Cross-interview.

How did you come up with the idea of approaching wine through the lens of its colors?

G. C.: It all started with a book from our daughter,Colorama. "A picture book of color shades for children published by" Gallimard. I had a flash on the ring road, in the traffic jams of course, with Victor...

V. C.: I remember it perfectly. It was between Porte d'Aubervilliers and Porte de la Chapelle...

G. C.: As an artist, color has interested me for many years. However, I don't know much about wines. Therefore, it's more their tones that speak to me. So, I suggested to Victor that we create a wine guide by color, designed like a Pantone color chart. An approach never seen before, I believe.

V. C.: On my part, what made me want to create this book was a sort of epiphany, a fairly recent realization that natural wines had dispelled the idea of drinking labels. As a proponent of these anti-Parker wines, I cultivated a more sensory, more romantic approach to wine: I had cravings for color rather than a specific vintage or cuvée. Here, a well-orange maceration; there, a very light red; another time, a well-bled rosé... This stance, I found it useful to defend it, by highlighting through this book the beauty of the colors of wines, as calls to drink them.

What does the color say about the wine?

V. C. : Many things. Sommeliers are unanimous on this point. You just have to watch them at work. Just by looking, the best among them gather a lot of information about the wine being tasted. Its nuances, its intensity, its turbidity, its density... all provide information about its grape variety, its terroir, the exposure of the vineyard, and its winemaking methods. This very sensory approach is equally educational...
