Description

Nominated ten times for an Oscar, Paul Newman finally won the award for Best Actor in 1987, for The Color of Money. His filmography includes some sixty roles, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Hustler, The Wildest of All, Luke the Cold Hand, Butch Cassidy and the Kid, The Verdict and Paths of Perdition. But his talent doesn't stop at cinéma sets. As a racing driver, Newman won several national championships. In addition, as a political and humanitarian activist, he has raised and donated nearly a billion dollars to numerous charities, particularly those of which he is the founder. Paul Newman had six children and was married for fifty years to actress Joanne Woodward. He died in 2008 at the age of eighty-three.
Stewart Stern, Paul Newman's longtime ami , was his confidant during the recordings that make up this book. He is best known for writing the screenplay for the films The Fury of Life, The Rack and Rachel , Rachel, directed by Paul Newman.

It was in 1986, the year of his honorary Oscar and his sixty-first birthday, that Paul Newman sat down with his old ami, screenwriter Stewart Stern, to record snippets of memories for a biography. An undertaking that lasted several years, for which Stewart Stern also interviewed all those who gravitated around the Hollywood star, his close family, friends and fellow actors, screenwriters, producers, but also former university or naval friends. A few years after Newman's death, it was the transcripts of these tapes that made it possible to tell the story of The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man, an intimate testimony to what it is like to be the most admired face on the planet.
