Description

Bordeaux: the city, the vineyard - same name, same identity... Here is an unparalleled panorama of this common construction of a city and a wine-growing region. Bordeaux and its vineyards, a model of civilization, is a unique book of its kind: it paints a picture of one of the most renowned vineyards in the world. Relying on rich iconography - maps, graphs, and photographs - it allows one to grasp its complexity. Boasting 120,000 hectares and nearly 6,000 estates, some of which are particularly renowned, this vineyard, in full transition, is of rare diversity. Here is an overview of its current state. This comprehensive book is based on texts accessible to the general public, written by about fifty specialists: academics but also individuals from various socio-professional backgrounds in the vine and wine sectors, institutions involved in the governance of the vineyard, and local authorities. Raphaël Schirmer, who directed this publication, is an agrégé and holds a doctorate in Geography. He teaches at the University of Bordeaux Montaigne. An expert at the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO), he has notably published "Vignoble nantais, histoire et géographie" (Presses Universitaires de Bordeaux, 2010) and "Vignes et vins, paysages et civilisations millénaires" (Glénat, 2018). He maintains a blog on the vine and wine, Caber.net, featured on the website of the magazine Le Point in the "wine" pages.
