Description
Our favorite drinks have a crazy history: after "Bouffes Bluffantes" in 2018, the data journalist passionate about history and gastronomy, Nicolas Kayser-Bril, tackles these beverages that reveal a lot about our civilization. Did you know that the Mesopotamians brewed barley long before inventing the wheel? And that modern beer was born in Picardy, an invention attributed to Charlemagne's cousin. As for the first distillers, they were chased like sorcerers with their firewater. The association of women with white wine? This annoying stereotype dates back to ancient Greece. And why was it so long difficult to find a good espresso in an English village as a good tea in a French village? When did we stop giving children pastis-flavored candies? When did Coca-Cola remove cocaine from its recipe? Most of these beloved beverages could have ended up in the graveyard of disappeared drinks if not for the twists of history. By debunking the myths and clichés found at the bottom of our glasses, from antiquity to the present day, we better understand the world around us. Welcome to the road of thirst!
