Description
The contents list of this, our second annual travel supplement, is rather revealing about the remarkable global spread of fine wine production. As with last year's well-received inaugural guide, all the established and classic wine regions of the world are covered in detail, with revised and updated sections featuring the best of wine tourism from Burgundy to the Barossa, and from Sonoma to Somontano.
But this year we also have some intriguing new additions. The remarkable viticultural renaissance that has taken place in central, eastern, and southern Europe is reflected in pieces on Croatia and Georgia, while the ever-catching growth and quality of its traditional-method sparkling wines earns England a place. Further afield, Canada's burgeoning pan-provincial scene is featured, while India flies the flag for Asia's vinous rise.
No matter the country, our objective with this supplement reflects one of TUTW's core beliefs: that the ability to transmit a sense of place is what makes wine such a uniquely special and stimulating drink—and that visiting the place where our favorite wines are made can only enrich our understanding and enjoyment when we come to drink them back home.
Whether you are planning an itinerary focused entirely on wine, hope to incorporate a vineyard or wine-country visit in your next holiday, or merely wish to take an armchair tour, the following pages are filled with ideas and tips on the best wineries to visit, and the best wine-country hotels, restaurants, and bars in which to eat and stay. Together we hope we will provide you with all the inspiration—and no little practical information—on the best way of experiencing the terroirs and wine cultures that shape your favorite vines first hand.
