Description

Alcohol and Celebration: Drinking Habits of the New Student Youth, signed by Jacqueline Freyssinet-Dominjon and Anne-Catherine Wagner, is a reference work for anyone wishing to understand the new social practices of young adults.

Contrary to moralizing or alarmist discourse, the authors propose a fine sociological analysis the use of alcohol in the student festive context. Far from being anecdotal, alcohol consumption appears here as a structuring social ritual, at the heart of a renewed sociability, marked by a form of framed transgression, between Self-affirmation and quest for collective cohesion.

Based on a in-depth ethnographic study driving with more than 200 students from diverse backgrounds, this work relies on numerous semi-structured interviews and of the participant observations student parties. This immersion allows for understanding from the inside the codes, implicit norms, emotions, and group dynamics that shape these moments of intense conviviality.

The book also questions the role of alcohol in the identity construction of young people, at the intersection of gender, social class, and culture. How do students drink today? With whom? In what circumstances? And for what reasons? These questions are analyzed without judgment, from a perspective rigorous sociological, by combining the approaches of the Sociology of youth, of the sociology of the party and of the sociology of consumption.

Alcohol at the party is part of the collection Social logics at the publishers The Harmattan and is aimed at both researchers in the humanities and professionals in health, education, as well as parents who wish to better understand the younger generations.

A fascinating book to better understand the Transformations of student practices, through the lens of a subject as universal as it is divisive: party and alcohol.
