Dive into Provençal cuisine with A Life Rubbed with Garlic by Gui Gedda, a true pope of southern gastronomy. Between delightful stories and nearly 500 iconic recipes – bouillabaisse, pistou soup, ratatouille, pieds et paquets – this book pays tribute to the culinary memory of the South. More than just a collection of recipes, it is a celebration of transmission, travel, and the gourmet heritage of Provence.
A Life Rubbed with Garlic: The Provençal Cuisine of Yesterday and Tomorrow is much more than just a cookbook: it is a complete immersion into the sunny universe of Provence and in the culinary memory of its greatest ambassador, Gui Gedda.
Born in Marseille in 1932, nicknamed the Pope of Provençal cuisine or even the Pagnol of French cuisine, Gui Gedda left his mark on the culinary scene of the South. Leading three renowned establishments in Bormes-les-Mimosas, he dedicated his life to promoting the flavors of his native land. His journey is marked by travels, encounters, and above all, a deep attachment to the Transmission of culinary knowledge.
At just seventeen years old, while apprenticing in a hotel-restaurant on the Canebière, he begins to put down on paper the Provençal recipes from his grandmother. These writings, born from a need for comfort, would become the foundation of an extraordinary literary and gastronomic career. Not convinced by overly classic gastronomic labels, he celebrates from the start the melodious and popular character of the Southern cuisine.
This book has nearly 500 preparations traditional and modern. There you will find the great classics that have made Provence famous:
the Bouillabaisse,
the feet and packages,
the pistou soup,
the ratatouille,
the stuffed vegetables.
Each recipe is accompanied by anecdotes, stories, and reflections, revealing the full richness of Mediterranean culture.
If Gui Gedda defends passionately the regional cuisine, nonetheless, he remains an advocate of openness. He reminds us that Provence also owes its culinary identity to products from elsewhere, such as tomatoes or eggplants. This balance between preserving heritage and embracing the Mediterranean gives this work a timeless dimension.
More than a cook, Gedda is a Storyteller. His humor, wit, and sensitivity shine through on every page. The stories he shares are filled with figures from Marseille, historical personalities, and even stars like Jean Seberg, , Yul Brynner or Abel Ferrara.
With its codified recipes, its anecdotes and its narrative richness, A life rubbed with garlic is aimed both at cooking enthusiasts and professionals eager to better understand and pass on the Provençal culinary heritage.
