Since the 6th century, the vineyards in Corrèze have shaped the landscape and the local economy. From the founding monks to today's winemakers, Roger Pouget traces this viticultural epic marked by phylloxera and successive renaissances. A fascinating book on the viticultural heritage of Corrèze, blending history, traditions, and renewal.
For more than fifteen centuries, the Corrèze maintains a deep connection with the vine. In History of Vine in Corrèze: From Origins to the Present Day, , Roger Pouget Trace with precision and passion the evolution of a vineyard that is now discreet but once flourishing.
As soon as the 6th century AD J.-C., the monks settled in Lower Corrèze discover an ideal terroir for the cultivation of vine. The well-exposed slopes, varied soils, and temperate climate promote the development of a production appreciated throughout the Limousin. These wines then supply the cellars of the Religious, of the lords and the bourgeois, contributing to regional prosperity.
Over the centuries, the Corrèze vineyard structures: the winegrowers transmit their expertise, the grape varieties adapt, and trade expands. In the 19th century, the vineyard area reached nearly 17,000 hectares, reflecting the economic and cultural importance of wine in the region.
But this story experiences a major tragedy: the arrival of the Phylloxera in 1875. This tiny aphid, a root pest, destroys almost all of the French vineyards, and does not spare the Lower Corrèze. This scourge is causing a collapse of local viticulture, permanently disrupting the agricultural fabric.
In the face of the catastrophe, the inhabitants are responding with courage. A Quarter of the vineyard is replanted, while new crops are emerging, reshaping the rural landscape. The agricultural conversion operates slowly, but the memory of the vine remains vivid.
Today, the Corrèze wine region only counts 400 hectares of vineyards, but a renewal is initiated thanks to passionate producers. A few dozen hectares testify to this Renaissance, symbol of attachment to a Wine heritage unique and of a ancestral know-how reinvented.
This documented and richly illustrated work is both a Historical study, a Cultural survey and a tribute to those who, from generation to generation, have cultivated the Corrézian land with passion.
Through maps, stories, and anecdotes, Roger Pouget highlights the great periods of this human adventure: the monastic beginnings, the golden age of the 19th century, the phylloxera crisis, and the modern reconstruction.
An essential book for all the wine history enthusiasts, the curious about French terroirs and the enthusiasts of rural heritage.
